This black and Yellow argiope (argiope aurantia) is commonly known as a "writing spider." She was found in my garden this summer and has done a great job keeping bugs off of the peppers. Female writing spiders eat their webs every night and rebuild them in the morning, and usually hang upside down. When aggitated, they violently shake their web back and forth to intimidate potential preditors, such as mud daubers. A common urban legend says that if a writing spider writes your name in its web, you had better watch out. (This photo has been viewed 3162 times)
