Black Swallowtail Caterpillar
Reader photo submitted by Bo Pinkley
This black swallowtail caterpillar (papilio polyxenes) is enjoying lunch on a parsley plant in my garden in Taylors. This caterpillar is about two inches long and will spend the rest of the fall eating and preparing to spend winter in its cacoon. It should hatch into a butterfly in the spring. These caterpillars closely resemble their cousins, the pipevine swallowtail, which are poisonous. They also emmit a sticky musk smell to ward off predators. (This photo has been viewed 3214 times)
